Hello and welcome to the fall 2020 semester! We are pleased to provide you with this inaugural issue of the IUPUI Next Generation 2.0 Newsletter. This quarterly newsletter will provide you with updates about the Next Gen 2.0 program, accomplishments of your fellow cohort alumni, helpful tips, and more. If you have some news to share, please email us at ude[dot]iupui[at]negtxen and we will be sure to include it in the newsletter. We hope you find that this newsletter is both informative and facilitates a sense of connection with your peers to sustain you in your leadership journey here at IUPUI.
Of course, we are mindful that this will be a semester unlike any other we have experienced in the past. We hope that this newsletter finds you and your families well, but we also extend our care and comfort to those who may have experienced stress, anxiety, illness, and/or loss as a result of the current pandemic. Like many of you, we recognize that change is inevitable and that growth can occur through trying times. As leaders, we may be propelled into new opportunities for learning, growth, and collective responsibility as we grapple with struggles for social justice, economic viability, and public health and well-being. We stand ready to support you and your engagement as transformative change agents on this campus and beyond.

Due to the ongoing evolving situation surrounding the coronavirus, we have decided to cancel the annual Next Gen 2.0 cohort alumni reception. We look forward to gathering us all together in the fall of 2021.
In the meantime, we would still like to acknowledge the following individuals for their latest accomplishments since our last reception in fall 2019:

- Shawn Boyne: Appointed as director of academic quality and undergraduate education at Iowa State University
2016-17 Cohort
- Julie Goodspeed-Chadwick: Awarded the title of Chancellor’s Professor
- Kim Lewis: Promoted to IUPUI registrar
- Willie Miller: Promoted to associate dean for communication and technology (University Library)
- Karen Lee: Obtained her Master’s in Technology with a concentration in organizational leadership and supervision (Purdue School of Engineering and Technology)

- Rachel Wheeler: Appointed as director of the Pathways Minor Program (Liberal Arts); received grant from IU Research on COVID-19-related issue (RealCV project)

This month, special recognition goes out to Ukamaka Oruche (2019-20 Cohort) who, in addition to acquiring a recent grant from the NIH’s National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparity, stepped up during this public health crisis by providing several videos pertaining to mental health and COVID-19. Here are just a few of her contributions:
Finally, we bid a fond yet bittersweet farewell to Amanda Bonilla and Molly Morin (2018-19 Cohort). Amanda is assuming the role of the inaugural Executive Director of Student Diversity, Equity, and Belonging for the Ivy Tech Community College system. In this role, she will be responsible for the vision, leadership, strategic planning, and implementation of inclusion and equity initiatives for students across Ivy Tech’s 18 campuses. Molly has been appointed Director of Collegiate Programs for the Simon Scholars Program, a program of the Simon Family Foundation. We wish you much success in these new leadership positions. We will miss you both!

Have you ever thought to yourself…”Who am I”? This traditional approach to self-awareness views it as a discovery process. It follows a maxim of traditional philosophy inscribed in the Temple of Apollo at Delphi to “Know Thyself.” However, in this recent article in Forbes, The Misunderstanding of Self-Awareness in Organizations, business coach, Frederic Funck, suggests we also ask ourselves, “ Who am I to become”? He explains that this approach frames the process as a creative one focusing on the future and directing our energies to the question, “Who must I become to empower my vision, my future, my life”? Focusing on this question, he suggests, will help us focus on our transformational potential to “elevate ourselves to the level of what we aspire to, instead of bringing our vision to our current level of functioning.”

The sixth cohort of Next Gen 2.0 has been launched! On Thursday, August 13, we were pleased to meet with 7 faculty and 12 staff of our new cohort via Zoom. We are excited to get started with our program which will witness many changes due to the pandemic.
In addition to being “masked up,” we will be situated in rooms that maximize social distancing. Another change this year is that we have offered the option of participating in-person or via Zoom to both the cohort members and the presenters. Unfortunately, given space constraints, we have also asked that our board members participate via Zoom. And in alignment with current campus plans, we have decided to have our December and January sessions solely online.
Finally, we have decided to have our popular bonus sessions on Zoom. We are currently finalizing these sessions so stay tuned for your Outlook calendar invite!
