Faculty Search-Vacancy Step
When applying to have a job posting approved, HR staff will need to submit a 'vacancy' coversheet and package through PeopleAdmin. Here are the steps and information needed:
Search committee:
- Comprised of at least three members.
- Member are diverse (career stage, role, expertise, culture, etc.).
- Chair and committee members have received training. See "Training for Faculty Search Committees" on this page.
Search process:
Describe the steps taken to help ensure a fair and competitive search that attracts a strong and diverse applicant pool. Examples of effective practices include having individuals with varied career stages, roles, and areas of expertise on the search committee; completing required search training; and promoting general awareness of potential bias in evaluation.
Where applicable, reference guidance from the school’s strategic hiring plan or action steps outlined by the Office of Civil Rights Compliance (OCRC). Be sure to note specific strategies used to support broad outreach—such as a targeted marketing plan or advertising in venues likely to reach a wide range of qualified candidates. As of July 1, 2023, IU Indianapolis no longer uses HERC.

What will happen:
If you indicate that assistance is needed with any step—or if the outlined steps appear too limited to reflect established search guidelines—the Office of the Provost may follow up to offer additional guidance.
Once all steps are completed, the vacancy notice will be reviewed and approved by the Office of the Provost and the Office of Civil Rights Compliance (OCRC).
